Attention students interested in taking the PSAT in October – Study Guides for the PSAT are now available in the Counseling Office.
Cost for the PSAT is $16. Cash or check to MUSD can be given to Ms. Rzemienski in the counseling office. To guarantee a spot please turn in your money no later than September 25th.

AIMS
This fall we will be having AIMS retests for juniors and seniors. If you scored meets on a test and want to retake it for exceeds, let your counselor know as soon as possible. Counselors are in the process of ordering AIMS tests and want to make sure we have enough tests for everyone.

The Tony Clark Scholarship is now available. It is open to seniors with at least a 2.0 GPA. Minorities and low-income students highly encouraged to apply. Deadline is 8/31/07. Visit the counseling office for more information.

The Dance Team will have tryouts Thursday August 30, 2007 from 3:45pm to 5:30pm in the Multi Purpose Room. Please bring warm up attire so that you are able to move freely.

School Pictures
School pictures will be taken on August 30th during you English Class. You can pick up a pictures packet in the office if you need one. Senior Pictures will be taken at a different time.

FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America): the first meeting of the year will be on Thursday, August 30 at 7:45 at the CTE building-Room # 1.
Agenda includes electing of officers, planning for the year, and fundraising ideas will be discussed. Any student interested is welcome to attend.

The M & I Bank Scholarship for student athletes is now available. This scholarship is for seniors with at least a 3.25 GPA who have participated in at least one sport. Deadline is October 27. See Ms. Rzemienski for information.

Reminder to all NHS members – old and new. There is a meeting tomorrow 5/15 in Crosbie’s room, 2E at 3:30 to discuss the ceremony for induction into NHS. Reminder number 2 – the ceremony for the induction is on Thursday, May 17th.

Track
Maricopa participated in the state track meet at Mesa Community College on Friday and Saturday. Freshman Brittany Parks led the girl’s team with a 4th place in the long jump, 3rd place in the 400 meters, and 1st in the 100 meters and 200 meters. This led Maricopa to a 5th place team score. Others participating in the state meet were; Khrystal Neal who tied for 9th in the high jump, Karla Torres and Danielle Munoz in the 800 meter run, Shamira Square in the shot put, the 4x400 relay team, and the 4x800 relay team.

The boy’s team participated at the state track meet on Friday and Saturday. Roman Wilson placed 2nd in the 110 meter high hurdles, the 4x100 relay team made it to the finals, Ronnie Reed ran in the 100 meters, Steven Wess ran in the 400 meters and jumped in the high jump. The boy’s 4x400 and 4x800 also ran at the state meet. We had many runners who ran their fastest times of the year. We have a young team and are looking foreword to next year.

Band Concert
The final Band Concert of the year will be this Thursday at 7:00pm in the MPR. Please come and support the band. It is FREE!

Attendance Appeals
If you have 10 or more absences in any class this semester, you will lose credit for those classes. You MUST fill out an appeal form to be considered fro re-instatement of credit for those classes. The form is available in the attendance office. Don’t procrastinate! It is your responsibility to take care of this.

Hey students! The Maricopa Elementary School Library is in need of student volunteers to help with their forthcoming book fair. If you are interested in helping and earning community service hours, please see Ms. Hawkins in the high school library as soon as possible. Congratulations Wesley Gonzalez! You are the lucky winner of the jelly bean contest sponsored by the library! You guessed 1,700 and there were 1,668 in the jar! Wesley received his prize last Friday and surely shared it with all his friends! Way to go Wesley!

Thank you MHS for supporting the book fair. As a result of your contributions, the library was able to purchase $962 of materials to add to the collection! A special thank you also goes to the student and adult volunteers. Over 30 student volunteers helped make this event a success! Thank you!

The track team traveled to Eloy, AZ and competed against Santa Cruz, Ajo, and Empire. Both teams did very well, the girls finished 2nd to Empire by only 3 points, Brittany Parks won the 100 meters, 200 meters, and the long jump, Cassie Morales won the 800 meters, Khrystal Neal won the high jump, the girls won the 4x100 relay with Caroline Fayen, Shamira Square, Karla torres and Brittany Parks, and the 4x800 relay with Cassie Morales, Danielle Munoz, Karla torres and Alyssa Joaquin. We also had many other athletes that placed in the top five.
On the boy’s side Jordan Best won the 200, followed closely by Steven Wess, Steven Wess also won the 400 and the high jump. Roman Wilson won the 110 meter and 300 meter hurdle races, and the boy’s also won the 4x100 relay with Jordan Best, Carlos Leon, Steven Wess and Roman Wilson. We also had many boys placing in the top five.

Benefit Car Wash
There will be a benefit car wash at Checker Auto Parts April 7th starting at 9:00AM for Nick McCluen who has been diagnosed with Leukemia. Nick is the brother of Crystal McCluen and a cousin to Kolina Lamb. They are also asking for volunteers to help work. Contact your Student Council if you are available to help. This is a good Community Service opportunity for our Service oriented organizations.

Seniors
Any Senior that would like to be involved in planning this years Baccalaureate, see Mrs. Early in room 1E.

The Track teams did very well at the Coolidge Invitational yesterday. The girls scored 62 points; the team was led by Brittany Parks first place wins in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump. The girls also placed 2nd in the 4x200 and 4x800 relays, fourth in the 4x100 and 4x400 relay. Khrystal Neal placed 4th in the high jump and several others placed for the team.
The boys scored 22 points, finishing 2nd in the 4x200 relay, fifth in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Steven Wess placed 5th in the jump and Roman Wilson placed 5th in the triple jump.

Anyone interested in playing basketball there will be open gym for the boys tonight from 4-6. If you played boys basketball this winter and are not planning on attending open gym tonight see Coach Kevin and let him know how many people in you family are going to attend the Awards banquet on April 12th.

Job announcement: Looking for someone to do a couple things around the house while we are at work (easy dinners, cleaning the kitchen, folding laundry) and possible some babysitting on the weekends. The schedule would be pretty flexible probably around 4-6 M-TH or F. If you are interested, please see Ms. Whitchurch in the front office.

Dress Code
Remember short shorts are not allowed. Shorts need to be finger tip length. Tank tops are not allowed. Midriff or cleavage are not allowed to be showing. Sagging pants are not allowed. You will be written up on these items. Someone will have to bring you clothes to change into. So save everyone time and frustration and wear the appropriate clothing.

New Year's Dance - The Student Ambassadors Club will be sponsoring a New Year's Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room. Hope to see everyone there. Dress is casual but school appropriate. Tickets will be on sale soon!

Free College Credits! A representative from Axia College will be in the MHS Library at 10 am on Thursday, January 11. Learn how you can get up to 4 college credits for FREE while still in high school. College classes are taken on-line. Please see Ms. Rzemienski for a pass prior to the presentation date.

We need students to help with child care for our Parent University to be held at the new Elementary School. Work on January 20th (sat) from 8-1 and get paid $5 an hour. Please visit Ms. Rzemienski for details.

The Maricopa High School Academic Decathlon Club is a team that studies the current year’s ten-subject curriculum, then goes to scrimmages and meets to compete against other schools throughout the state. Currently, we meet in room 6W on Wednesdays at 3:30. This is the best college preparation program offered in the schools. The Class of 2008 has started their Domino’s Pizza Fundraiser for Prom. The pizza cards contain 16 stickers for free pizza’s and cost $10.00. To purchase a card see Miss Modlin in Rm. 2W or a Junior class officer.

TURKEY DRIVE
The annual Turkey Drive has arrived and we are raising money for 60 plus families in need this Thanksgiving. We will be giving them a complete turkey meal that will include mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, milk, pumpkin pie, and yes a turkey. If every student donates one dollar we will be able pay for all of the meals. Come to the prevention center to donate your dollar.

The Maricopa Cheer Squad is having tryouts for the upcoming basketball season. We will be building a brand new JV squad for this exciting season, and there is a possibility for one candidate to join the existing Varsity competition squad.

All candidates MUST have a cleared sports physical into the office by the first clinic date.

Date of clinics: November 20 and 21. Tryouts are on November 22. Times for all three dates are from 7-8:30 AM. Place is the multipurpose room. All dates are mandatory.

The Maricopa High School Academic Decathlon Club is a team that studies the current year’s ten-subject curriculum, then goes to scrimmages and meets to compete against other schools throughout the state. Currently, we meet in room 6W on Wednesdays at 3:30. This is the best college preparation program offered in the schools. Do you need to type a paper? Do you need to print your assignments? Need help with MLA/APA documentation? Mr. Bowman’s class (Room V2 next to football field) is now available for HS student use each morning from 7:30 am – 8:55 am and evenings from 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm. Microsoft Office suite is available: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access as well as numerous other programs.

Student Ambassadors is a club that helps new students transition smoothly to MHS. Our next meeting is this Friday, November 10th at 8:30 a.m. in room 5W. All students are welcome to join this club. Please join us for our meeting!

The Maricopa Cheer Squad is having tryouts for the upcoming basketball season. We will be building a brand new JV squad for this exciting season, and there is a possibility for one candidate to join the existing Varsity competition squad.

All candidates MUST have a cleared sports physical into the office by the first clinic date.

Date of clinics: November 20 and 21. Tryouts are on November 22. Times for all three dates are from 7-8:30 AM. Place is the multipurpose room. All dates are mandatory.

Seniors
If you do not have an appointment with Amy Jamieson for your senior pictures, please see Mrs. Pickens in the office. We have 28 Seniors that did not get their pictures taken. You need to see Mrs. Pickens right away to see if you can still get an appointment.

Pizza Cards
The Class of 2008 has started their Domino’s Pizza Fundraiser for Prom. The pizza cards contain 16 stickers for free pizza’s and cost $10.00. To purchase a card see Miss Modlin in Rm. 2W or a Junior class officer.

Computer Use
Do you need to type a paper? Do you need to print your assignments? Need help with MLA/APA documentation? Mr. Bowman’s class (Room V2 next to football field) is now available for HS student use each morning from 7:30 am – 8:55 am and evenings from 3:30 pm – 4:15 pm. Microsoft Office suite is available: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access as well as numerous other programs.

Requirements:
Prior log-in access (I cannot log you in, you must have your own log in access)
Current student ID
No Food or drinks allowed

TURKEY DRIVE
The annual Turkey Drive has arrived and we are raising money for 60 plus families in need this Thanksgiving. We will be giving them a complete turkey meal that will include mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, rolls, milk, pumpkin pie, and yes a turkey. If every student donates one dollar we will be able pay for all of the meals. Come to the prevention center to donate your dollar.

Attention Students,

A week and a half ago we lost a tremendous teacher who served in our community for several years. Judy Gordon was not only a tremendous teacher, but a wonderful woman. Her loss is felt by the district, staff, and community. We are holding a memorial for her today Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Multipurpose Room and the reception will be held in the Summit. Please come and share your memories, prayers, and emotions with her family and friends.

FLAGLINE/COLORGUARD
We are still building a FLAG LINE… or sometimes called COLORGUARD! These are the people that dance with GIANT, COLORFUL, SPARKLY (If you know Crosbie, you know COLORFUL AND SPARKLY have to be involved to get her interest!) flags out in front of the band. Also, there are FLAG competitions in the Spring that show off your dance and agility skills without the band. If you thought about dance team but missed tryouts, come to the FLAG meeting today WEDNESDAY, November 8th at 3:45pm in Crosbie’s room, 19W. You will not just march – you will dance!!!! See Crosbie if you have any questions!
